QUESTIONS

Before You Play

Is Mahjong NTX a league for players in Frisco, Plano and nearby communities?

Yes. Mahjong NTX is a flexible American Mahjong league serving players across North Texas, including Frisco, Plano, McKinney and surrounding communities. Players choose when and where to schedule their rounds.

How do I register for the Mahjong NTX Fall Scramble 2026?

Select Register or Let’s Play anywhere on this page. You will continue to the Mahjong NTX registration page on MahjMate to create your player profile and complete registration.

Do I have to play every week?

No. There is no minimum play requirement.

What's the difference between a game and a round?

A game is one hand of Mahjong, played until someone declares Mahjong or the wall runs out. A round is four games played in one sitting by the same four registered players. The round is what you schedule, what you submit a score for, and what counts toward the standings. On MahjMate, each listing on the Games page (including "+ Create game") is one full four-game round, so joining a listing means signing up for all four games.

How do I win?

Your best two round scores each week (Sunday through Saturday) count toward your season total. A cancellation within 24 hours of a scheduled round costs 10 points if your seat is not filled. At the end of the Fall Scramble, the player with the highest season total is named Scramble Champion. Prizes are also awarded for Second Place, Third Place, Social Butterfly and Steady Hand. One player may win more than one prize.

How do I keep score?

Scoring uses the point values on the 2026 NMJL card. A wall game is worth 10 points for each player. Add up your points from all four games in the round, and submit that four-game total as your round score on MahjMate. Only completed four-game rounds are submitted.

How are wall games scored?

A wall game (when no one declares Mahjong) is worth 10 points for each of the four players. Include those points in your four-game round total.

Is there a time limit for a round?

There is no set time limit. Plan enough time to complete all four games in your scheduled round. Your group can play at its natural pace.

Where do we play?

Anywhere your group agrees. Your home, another player's home, a country club or another convenient location all work.

Can I play with friends?

Yes. As long as all four players are registered for the Scramble, you can schedule a round together.

Can I meet new players?

Yes. Join rounds posted by other registered players and expand your Mahjong circle.

How long does a round take?

Most individual games take about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the pace of the table. A round is four games, so plan on about 1 to 2 hours for each round you sign up for.

What if I am a beginner?

Beginners are welcome. When you register, you will self rate as beginner, intermediate or advanced. Playing with a mix of experience levels is completely fine and highly encouraged.

What do I need to know to play?

If you can play a game of American Mahjong, understand the basic flow of play and are comfortable using the current NMJL card, you can participate. You do not need tournament experience or advanced strategy knowledge.

How do I find people to play with?

Registered players can propose a round or join one posted by another player. You can play with friends you already know, meet new players, or do a little of both.

Can I play with the same people more than once?

Yes. You may play with the same registered players more than once. Playing with different people is encouraged, but it is not required.

Do all four players have to be registered?

Yes. For a round to count toward the Scramble, all four players must be registered for the current season.

How does a Scramble week work?

Each Scramble week runs Sunday through Saturday. Your best two round scores completed during that week count toward your season total. You can play as many rounds as you’d like.

Can I play more than two rounds in a week?

Absolutely. Play as often as you like. Only your best two qualifying round scores from that week count toward the leaderboard.

What if I miss a week?

Nothing happens. There is no minimum play requirement. You simply will not have round scores to contribute for that week unless you play.

What happens if someone cancels?

A scheduled round is a commitment to the other three players. If you must cancel, notify them immediately and make a reasonable effort to help find a registered replacement. A cancellation made less than 24 hours before the scheduled start time costs 10 points if your seat is not filled. The round counts only if four registered players complete it.

What if we cannot finish all four games?

A qualifying round is four games. If all four games are not completed, the round is not submitted as a completed qualifying round.

How are ties handled?

Ties stay visible on the standings during the season. If a tie affects a final prize, it is broken in this order: (1) highest single round score of the season, (2) higher average round score, (3) more completed rounds played. If players are still tied, the league organizer breaks the tie with a coin toss. For Social Butterfly and Steady Hand, ties go first to more completed rounds played, then to highest single round score.

Can I join after the Scramble starts?

Yes. Registration remains open through November 5 for the Fall 2026 Scramble. Players joining after the season begins start from the point they register and do not receive retroactive scores for earlier weeks.

Is my registration fee refundable?

Refund requests must be received before the Scramble begins. Registration fees are nonrefundable once the Scramble begins. To request a refund, email info@briarhousesocial.com.

How much is registration?

Early registration is $60 through September 25. Enter code EARLYBIRD at checkout to receive the early rate. Regular registration is $70 beginning September 26. Registration closes November 5.

What does my registration include?

Your registration includes participation in the full seven week Scramble, access to round scheduling, season standings and leaderboard, eligibility for prizes and awards, and the season giving component. Early registration is $60 through September 25 with code EARLYBIRD. Regular registration is $70 beginning September 26.

How do I know my score was entered correctly?

Players should review the round score together before it is submitted. The scoring process and submission steps will be provided after registration so everyone follows the same method.

Can I join if I only know one or two other Mahjong players?

Yes. You do not need to arrive with a full group. One of the goals of Mahjong NTX is to make it easy to join rounds and meet other players.

What do I need to bring?

If you propose the round, you are responsible for bringing everything needed to play: a Mahjong mat, tiles, racks and pushers. Every player should bring their own current NMJL card.

Do I need my own NMJL card?

Yes. Every player should bring their own current 2026 NMJL card to each round. Scoring is based on the point values shown on that card.

Do I have to host at my house?

No. If you propose a round, you choose the location and provide the game equipment. That can be your home, your club or another agreed location. Hosting at home is never required.
